长沙市夏国安艺术博物馆大事记（2013 年 - 2026 年）

综述

长沙市夏国安艺术博物馆是位于湖南省长沙市望城区铜官街道铜官巷街 168 号的非国有博物馆，由企业家、收藏家夏国安及其团队打造，举办单位为长沙梦蝶庄艺术馆有限公司(163)。馆舍占地 10 余亩，总建筑面积 3261.46 平方米，核心特色是将从安徽、浙江、江西等地整体迁移复建的徽派明清古建筑（含古戏台、民居、关帝庙等）与现代博物馆功能相结合，是一座集古建筑展示、民间艺术收藏、文化研学、非遗体验于一体的专题文化场馆(162)。

博物馆的发展历程贯穿了 “保护古建、活化文物” 的理念：其项目筹备始于 2013 年，2016 年正式开工建设，2018 年完成一期工程后对外免费开放；2021 年 7 月获湖南省文物局设立备案资格，同年 8 月完成民办非企业单位登记，正式以 “博物馆” 身份合规运营；2024 年 8 月起调整为收费开放模式；2026 年后期 3 亩扩建地块计划完成并对公众免费开放(146)。截至 2026 年，博物馆已形成 “两馆、两场、六基地” 的文旅格局，馆藏各类民间文物近万件，逐步成长为长沙铜官古镇的重要文化地标。

一、 Pre-Formation & Construction Phase (2013-2018)

This phase covers the project's initiation, construction, and the gradual realization of its core architectural features, marking the foundational stage of the museum from conception to completion.

2013

The project that would become the 长沙市夏国安艺术博物馆 was first initiated when its founder, Xia Guo'an, signed a investment and construction contract with the Wangcheng District Government of Changsha. The plan was to build a comprehensive cultural space integrating ancient architecture appreciation, folk art collection, and public cultural education within the Tongguan Ancient Street Historical and Cultural Protection Zone, a renowned local cultural heritage site. This moment marked the official start of the museum's decade-long construction and development process(146).

2016

On the previously reserved 6-acre preliminary plot, the official construction of the museum project began. The core of the construction was the protective relocation and restoration of three valuable ancient Huizhou-style folk residences. These buildings, with a history of hundreds of years, were originally located in the mountainous areas of southern Anhui and western Zhejiang. Xia Guo'an and his team adopted the traditional "disassemble, number, transport, and reassemble" restoration process: they carefully disassembled the building components piece by piece, uniformly transported them to Changsha, and then restored them to their original appearances on the prepared foundation. This entire relocation and restoration project took nearly three years to complete(146).

2018

The first phase of the museum's main project was completed. The core buildings opened to the public free of charge, including the three restored Huizhou-style ancient folk residences and the initially arranged folk art exhibition halls. However, due to the incomplete supporting facilities and the lack of a professional operation team, the museum did not hold an official opening ceremony. In the early stage of the opening, the museum only received scattered visitors and held no large-scale public cultural activities. This completion and opening marked the first phase of the project's construction goals, laying a solid foundation for the subsequent formal filing and standardized operation(146).

二、 Trial Operation & Preliminary Development (2019-2020)

During this period, the museum remained in its free trial operation stage, with its basic architectural landscape initially taking shape. While improving its hardware facilities, the museum began to explore the display and cultural dissemination functions of public cultural venues, laying a solid foundation for the subsequent formal filing.

2019

• Institutional Optimization: In June, the museum established its first board of directors, which was responsible for reviewing the museum's long-term development plans, annual work plans, and major investment projects. The board's establishment standardized the museum's corporate governance structure and laid a solid organizational foundation for its subsequent formal filing and operation.

• Hardware Improvement: The restoration of the first batch of ancient architectural courtyards was basically completed. In addition to the three previously relocated Huizhou-style folk residences, the restored Dongshan Temple Opera Stage and Dongshan Temple Guandi Temple were also opened to the public simultaneously. Among them, the Dongshan Temple Guandi Temple, which dates back to the Tang Dynasty, is a valuable historical heritage site. These ancient architectures themselves became the museum's first batch of "large-scale exhibits" that blend architectural art and historical value(150).

• Exhibition Exploration: The museum launched its first batch of basic themed exhibitions, including the Ancient Stone Carvings Exhibition, the Woodcarving Exhibition, and the Ancient Furniture Exhibition. The exhibits were mainly Xia Guo'an's personal collections, covering fine works of folk art from the Song Dynasty to the Republic of China. These exhibitions preliminarily defined the museum's positioning of "focusing on displaying traditional folk art"(86).

2020

The museum continued to operate for free, and its external cultural influence gradually expanded. On May 1st, it jointly organized the "Tongguan Ceramery and Folk Music" themed cultural activity with the Hunan Provincial Convention and Exhibition Industry Association. This activity combined the local intangible cultural heritage of Tongguan ceramics with modern original folk music, attracting nearly 1,000 young citizens and tourists to visit. It was the first large-scale public cultural activity held since the museum's trial opening. In the autumn of the same year, the museum launched the first phase of the "Dongshan Temple Historic Site Restoration Project", which repaired the main structure and stage buildings of the Dongshan Temple Opera Stage. After the repair, the opera stage became an important venue for the museum to display traditional opera art and hold intangible cultural heritage activities(84).

三、 Official Establishment & Standardized Development (2021-2023)

This was a critical turning point for the museum. It completed all official institutional formalities, standardized its public cultural services, and officially entered the national museum operation system.

2021

• Official Approval and Registration:

  On July 28th, the Hunan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism issued an official reply approving the establishment of the "Changsha Shaxi Guo'an Art Museum". The document clearly defined the museum's nature as a non-state-owned public cultural venue, with Changsha Mengdiezhuang Art Gallery Co., Ltd. as the sole organizer and the Changsha Municipal Bureau of Culture, Tourism and Sports as the superior competent authority(163).

  On August 13th, the Changsha Municipal Bureau of Civil Affairs officially granted the museum a private non-enterprise unit registration certificate. This marked the completion of all legal formalities for its establishment, and it officially became a formal art museum included in the national museum system(11).

• Standardization of Operations:

  On May 17th, the museum participated in the founding ceremony of the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Regional Museum Alliance held at the Changsha Museum. It became one of the first 40 member units of the alliance, opening a new chapter for its in-depth cooperation with public museums such as the Hunan Provincial Museum and the Changsha Museum in the fields of collection display, cultural relics protection, and public education(139).

  In the first half of the year, the museum collaborated with the Hunan Provincial Museum, the Changsha Museum, and the National Relics Newspaper to carry out a number of academic exchange activities related to exhibitions, including the Taoyuan Woodcarving Series Exhibition, the Tantou New Year Painting Exhibition, and the "Ox Turning the Universe" Joint Image Exhibition organized by 40 museums. These exchanges fully absorbed the advanced exhibition experience of public museums and standardized the museum's exhibition planning process. In December of the same year, the museum was officially recognized as a "Changsha Social Science Popularization Base", which affirmed its role in public cultural education.

• Exhibition System Improvement:

  The museum completed the planning and layout of its first batch of permanent themed exhibitions, including the "Solidified Beauty - Southern Song Dynasty Stone Carving Art Exhibition", the "Oriental Garden Aesthetics Art Exhibition", and the "China-Africa Ceramic Art Exhibition". These exhibitions were officially open to the audience on the opening day. Among them, the "Solidified Beauty - Southern Song Dynasty Stone Carving Art Exhibition" collected more than 80 pieces of Song Dynasty stone carving treasures, which were divided into three categories: warriors, attendants, and divine beasts. The relief technique was exquisite, fully reflecting the artistic style of the Southern Song Dynasty. This exhibition also became one of the museum's most popular permanent exhibitions(134).

• Public Activities:

  On the morning of February 26th, the museum cooperated with the Changsha Evening News to hold the "2021 Lantern Festival Ancient Style Garden Tour Activity". The activity included rich traditional folk culture experience projects such as Hanfu wearing, lantern riddles guessing, and traditional poetry reciting. Nearly 1,000 citizens and tourists participated in the activity, which was the first large-scale public folk activity held since the museum's trial operation(85).

  In May, the museum completed the planning of the "Millennium Ancient Kiln - Tongguan Ceramic History Exhibition". Through the cooperation of the alliance, it received a number of precious Changsha Kiln collections from the Hunan Provincial Museum and the Changsha Museum, greatly enriching the connotation of the exhibition. On December 3rd, the museum held a special open day for social science popularization. More than 200 primary and secondary school students from Changsha participated in the on-site experience activities such as the craftsmanship display of Tongguan ceramics and the rubbing operation of ancient stone carvings.

2022

• Honors & Social Functions:

  On June 21st, the Hunan Provincial Tea Culture Research Association awarded the museum the plaque of its first "Tea Culture Research Base". The awarding ceremony was held on the restored Dongshan Temple Opera Stage, and a tea culture-themed literary and art gathering was organized at the same time. This cooperation marked the official expansion of the museum's research practice system from a single folk art direction to a composite direction integrating art, folk customs and intangible cultural heritage(147).

  In the same year, the museum was officially rated as a "Changsha Primary and Secondary School Students' Research and Practice Base" and a "Hunan Overseas Chinese International Cultural Exchange Base", gradually undertaking more public cultural education and external communication functions(164).

• Exhibition Exchange Activities:

  In March, the museum received a research team led by Xiao Tao, President of the Hunan Provincial Tea Culture Research Association. The two parties conducted in-depth discussions on the theme of "the integration of tea culture and folk culture" and initially reached a cooperation intention to develop a series of research courses integrating tea culture and ceramic craftsmanship. In the first half of the year, the museum also organized a number of internal academic activities, inviting many domestic folklore experts and scholars to hold special lectures on the topics of "Huizhou Ancient Architecture Restoration" and "Southern Song Dynasty Stone Carving Art Appreciation". At the same time, the museum also carried out collection exchange activities with many private museums in the province, such as the Hunan Provincial Museum and the Changsha Museum, to continuously improve its academic research level.

• Resource Integration and Upgrading:

  The museum completed the integration of the "Mengdiequan" characteristic B&B area. On the basis of the original ancient architectural courtyards, the B&B area was renovated by relocating ancient buildings to form an ancient-style accommodation complex with 6 independent courtyards. This renovation transformed the museum from a single exhibition space into a "one-stop" cultural tourism complex integrating sightseeing, research, and accommodation. The public education and ancient architecture courtyard areas of the museum, which were newly expanded and upgraded, covered an area of more than 5,000 square meters. The five-story exhibition building was equipped with specialized exhibition halls, multi-functional conference rooms, manual classrooms, and outdoor sketching areas. It could simultaneously accommodate 500 people for research and study tours and 100 people for academic discussions. This upgrade significantly enhanced the museum's ability to receive large-scale public cultural activities(154).

2023

• Project Expansion & Completion: The main construction of the second phase of the museum's project was basically completed. This phase of the project included the expansion of the exhibition halls and the optimization of the external environmental landscape, which further improved the museum's supporting functions. The museum's collection area was expanded to 1,064 square meters, and the new cultural relics warehouse completed the installation of a constant temperature and humidity system, which greatly improved the professional storage conditions of the collection.

• Included in an Important National Directory: On March 27th, the official website of the National Cultural Heritage Administration released the "2021 National Museum Directory". Changsha Shaxi Guo'an Art Museum was included in this list, marking its official entry into the standardized management system of the national cultural heritage industry. This also means that the museum's construction, operation, and collection management work have been recognized by the national competent authorities(141).

• Cultural Exchange Activities: On June 9th, the museum cooperated with the Wangcheng District Federation of Literary and Art Circles to hold the "Great Beauty Wangcheng · Colorful Tongguan" Literary and Art Exchange Activity. More than 20 literary and art workers from the Changsha Writers Association and the Changsha Painting and Calligraphy Association participated in the activity. They carried out in-depth creation exchanges around the museum's ancient architecture resources and the connotation of local folk culture. The exchange results of this activity were displayed in the museum's multi-functional exhibition hall in July of the same year.

• Public Education Activities: The museum, together with the Hunan Provincial Museum and the Changsha Museum, launched a course development cooperation around the theme of "intangible cultural heritage inheritance". Relying on the collections of the three museums, it designed a series of research courses including "Tongguan Ceramic Rubbing Making" and "Huizhou Ancient Architecture Scaled Model Building". These courses were officially put into use in the spring of 2024. In the same year, the museum also received a number of university social practice groups, including the Hunan Vocational College of Commerce and Hunan Normal University, and jointly carried out a series of intangible cultural heritage inheritance research activities with them(96).

四、 Transformation and Stable Operation (2024-2026)

As the museum entered a mature stage of development, it adjusted its operational model based on market demand and diversified its cultural experience offerings to ensure the sustainable development of public services.

2024

• Adjustment of the Operation Mode: After more than half a year of preparation and publicity, the museum officially switched from the original free operation mode to a paid operation mode in August. The ticket price was set at 25 yuan per person. Special groups such as students, the elderly, and active-duty soldiers could enjoy relevant ticket discounts. The museum explained that the purpose of the ticketing was to cover the high daily maintenance costs of the ancient architecture and the collection and to provide visitors with better supporting services. The ticketing policy did not affect its public service attributes, and the research and education services for primary and secondary schools were still free of charge.

• New Thematic Exhibitions:

  On July 23rd, the museum's new permanent exhibition, the "Communist Party of China Tongguan Ceramic Workers' Branch Special Exhibition", was officially opened to the public. This exhibition, with a total area of more than 300 square meters, focuses on the history of the revolutionary activities of the Tongguan ceramic workers' branch in the 1920s. It uses more than 200 exhibits such as historical documents, old photos, and revolutionary objects to comprehensively reproduce the historical process of the local workers' movement. This exhibition also became the museum's first red-themed exhibition integrating exhibition and education. The exhibition was scheduled to last until 2029.

  On September 14th, the museum collaborated with the Hunan Yongzhou Chrysanthemum Stone Museum to launch the temporary exhibition "Chrysanthemum Stone Zen Feeling · Buddhist Light - themed Chrysanthemum Stone Carving Exhibition". More than 100 fine chrysanthemum stone carvings were exhibited, which lasted until December 31st of the same year.

• Upgrading of Cultural Experience Projects: The museum completed the upgrading of the "Dream Butterfly" intangible cultural heritage experience area. This area launched a series of interactive projects, such as the hand-making of Tongguan ceramic glazes and the rubbing of Southern Song Dynasty stone carvings. It also launched the "Night Tour of the Ancient Market" special tourism project, which combines the lighting landscape of the ancient architecture with the dynamic display of intangible cultural heritage projects. On the evening of National Day in 2024, the project received more than 2,000 visitors.

• Improvement of the Honor System: The museum was awarded the title of "Hunan Province Overseas Chinese International Cultural Exchange Base". The relevant leading cadres of the Hunan Provincial Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese conducted an on-site inspection and awarding ceremony at the museum. This award affirmed the museum's important role in spreading excellent traditional culture overseas and promoting cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.

2025

• Improvement of the Exhibition System: The museum added a new "Paintings and Calligraphy Exhibition of Celebrities of All Dynasties" on the second floor of the exhibition hall. This exhibition displays more than 300 fine paintings and calligraphies collected by the museum for a long time, including the works of famous Hunan painters such as Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong. At the same time, the museum's "Dough Sculpture Exhibition" was also officially opened in the new area on the second floor of the exhibition hall. This exhibition mainly displays the works of the famous Hunan dough sculpture intangible cultural heritage master, Liu Jishun.

• Public Cultural Activities: In March, the museum cooperated with the Changsha Cultural Relics Conservation Research Institute to carry out the "Ancient Architecture Maintenance Open Day" activity. The activity invited ancient architecture maintenance experts to explain the knowledge of ancient architecture protection and restoration to the audience, and organized the audience to visit the maintenance site of the ancient architecture in the museum. In May, the museum held a series of thematic activities around the "International Museum Day", including a public lecture on "the History of Tongguan Ceramics" and a folk art painting and calligraphy creation competition. These activities fully demonstrated the museum's achievements in cultural relics protection and cultural inheritance.

• Education and Cultural Exchange: The museum independently developed a series of research courses around the theme of "ancient architecture and ceramic culture", including "visiting the construction techniques of ancient Huizhou-style architecture" and "exploring the mysteries of Tongguan ceramic craftsmanship". These courses were officially selected into the "Hunan Province Primary and Secondary School Students' Research Course Catalog" in 2025. In terms of cultural exchange, the museum received a delegation of European art critics in April. The two sides conducted in-depth exchanges on the topics of "the protection and utilization of Chinese traditional ancient architecture" and "the development mode of private museums". In the same year, the museum also carried out a number of university-enterprise cooperation activities with Central South University, Hunan University, and the Hunan Provincial University of Technology, providing more than 100 internship positions for students of related majors.

• Facility Upgrading: The museum completed the upgrading of the digital monitoring system. This upgrading covered all the exhibition halls, the cultural relics warehouse, and the ancient architecture landscape area. It added a number of new functions such as face recognition for the protection of key cultural relics and intelligent monitoring of the constant temperature and humidity system. The overall security level of the museum's cultural relics protection was further improved.

2026

• Facility Expansion and Upgrading: The museum's third-phase expansion project, which covers the remaining 3 acres of land, is scheduled to be completed and open to the public for free in the second half of the year. This expansion project includes the newly built "Xufan Cheng Memorial Hall" and the "Black Shipyard Ceramic Art Exhibition Hall". Among them, the "Black Shipyard Ceramic Art Exhibition Hall" will display the museum's collection of more than 3,000 pieces of ceramic treasures from the Black Shipyard. In addition, the museum will also build a new academic exchange center with a construction area of more than 800 square meters, which can accommodate 300 people at the same time.

• Exhibition Upgrading: The museum newly planned the "Black Shipyard Collection Exhibition" and the "Chinese Ancient Architecture Living Art Exhibition" on the basis of the original exhibitions. The "Black Shipyard Collection Exhibition" is the first large-scale special exhibition in Hunan Province focusing on the cultural relics of the Black Shipyard. It is scheduled to be officially opened in the third quarter of 2026. The "Chinese Ancient Architecture Living Art Exhibition" will combine the museum's ancient architecture resources with the construction techniques of traditional ancient architecture to create a participatory exhibition integrating viewing and interaction.

• Public Cultural Services: The museum is preparing to launch an online 360° panoramic exhibition system, which is expected to be put into operation in the third quarter of 2026. At that time, the audience will be able to visit the museum's exhibitions online for free. In terms of offline activities, the museum will continue to cooperate with the Hunan Provincial Department of Education to carry out the "National Primary and Secondary School Students' Ancient Architecture Research Activity" and is expected to receive more than 50,000 research students throughout the year.

• Cultural and Creative Development: The museum is preparing to develop a series of cultural and creative products around the themes of "ancient architecture" and "stone carvings". The product line includes 12 categories of products, such as the "Ming Dynasty Nanmu Doors and Windows" series of stationery and the "Southern Song Dynasty Stone Carving" series of ornaments. This series of cultural and creative products is scheduled to be officially launched in the second half of 2026, and the relevant proceeds will be used for the daily maintenance of the ancient architecture and the protection of the collection.

五、 Key Collections & Exhibition Highlights

The museum's exhibitions are centered on the core theme of "ancient architecture + folk art", highlighting the characteristics of "living, movable, and interactive" cultural relics. The exhibits are mainly the personal collections of the founder, Xia Guo'an, and are supplemented by donations from folk collectors and the exchange of collections with public museums. The total number of exhibits is close to 10,000.

Permanent Exhibitions

The museum has carefully planned several core permanent exhibitions, ensuring that each exhibition has a distinct theme and abundant exhibits, fully presenting the charm of traditional Chinese folk art.

1. "Solidified Beauty - Southern Song Dynasty Stone Carving Art Exhibition": Located on the first floor of the main exhibition hall, this exhibition is one of the museum's core permanent exhibitions. It collects more than 80 pieces of fine Southern Song Dynasty stone carvings, including warrior statues, attendant statues, and divine beast white marble carvings unearthed in the coastal areas of Zhejiang. These stone carvings adopt the typical relief carving technique of the Southern Song Dynasty, with exquisite and lifelike expressions, and the details of the clothing folds are clear. This exhibition fully demonstrates the superb level of stone carving art in the Southern Song Dynasty.

2. "Oriental Garden Aesthetics Art Exhibition": This exhibition takes the museum's carefully restored Huizhou-style ancient architectural courtyard landscape as the core display carrier. It focuses on displaying the global architectural art integration model of "Huizhou-style ancient architecture + Jiangnan garden landscape". The exhibits include the restored three-hundred-year-old Huizhou-style folk residences, the ancient stage, and the exquisite stone carvings and wood carvings on the ancient buildings themselves. This exhibition perfectly presents the unique artistic charm of traditional Chinese ancient architecture and garden design.

3. "Communist Party of China Tongguan Ceramic Workers' Branch Special Exhibition": Located on the third floor of the main exhibition hall, this is the museum's only red-themed permanent exhibition. It takes the revolutionary history of the Tongguan ceramic workers' movement as the main context, and uses more than 200 historical documents, old photos, and revolutionary objects to comprehensively reproduce the establishment and development of the Tongguan ceramic workers' branch. This exhibition has been selected as the "Changsha Patriotic Education Base Exhibition Project" and is an important part of the local red tourism line.

4. "China-Africa Ceramic Art Exhibition": This exhibition is located on the first floor of the main exhibition hall and collects more than 3,000 pieces of precious cultural relics, including Changsha Kiln ceramics from the Black Shipyard, Changsha Kiln ceramic figurines, and Changsha Kiln ceramic pillows. The core of the exhibition is the "Black Shipyard Collection", which is systematically sorted out and displayed according to the development context of Changsha Kiln ceramics. This exhibition fully demonstrates the historical origin and artistic charm of Changsha Kiln ceramics as an export-oriented ceramic.

5. "Taoyuan Woodcarving, Hunan Embroidery and Woodcarving Exhibition": This exhibition is located on the second floor of the main exhibition hall and is a key cooperation project between the museum and the Hunan Provincial Museum. The exhibition focuses on the three major types of Hunan's folk art treasures: Taoyuan woodcarving, Xiang embroidery, and Tongguan ceramics. It collects more than 200 pieces of (sets) of folk art treasures, including the Qing Dynasty Taoyuan woodcarving hanging panels, the Qing Dynasty Xiang embroidery "Hundred Sons" figure screens, and the Ming Dynasty nanmu window carvings. This exhibition concentratedly shows the superb level of Hunan's local folk art.

Temporary Exhibitions & Special Events

In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the museum regularly plans high-quality temporary exhibitions and cultural activities to enrich the visiting experience and attract different audiences.

• 2021: Collaborated with the Hunan Provincial Museum, the Changsha Museum, and the National Relics Newspaper to launch the "Taoyuan Woodcarving Series Exhibition", the "Tantou New Year Painting Exhibition", and the "Ox Turning the Universe" Joint Image Exhibition co-organized by 40 museums. These exhibitions focused on the theme of "intangible cultural heritage inheritance" and were highly recognized by the industry and the public.

• 2022: Held the "Tea Culture and Ceramic Art Exchange Exhibition" on the Dongshan Temple Ancient Opera Stage. The exhibition displayed more than 100 pieces of tea sets and related cultural relics from the Tang Dynasty to the Republic of China, and was supported by the Hunan Provincial Tea Culture Research Association.

• 2023: Cooperated with the Wangcheng District Federation of Literary and Art Circles to hold the "Great Beauty Wangcheng · Colorful Tongguan" Literary and Art Works Exhibition, which displayed more than 100 calligraphy, painting, and photography works created by local literary and art workers around the museum's ancient architecture and folk art resources.

• 2024: Launched the "Chrysanthemum Stone Zen Feeling · Buddhist Light - themed Chrysanthemum Stone Carving Exhibition" in cooperation with the Hunan Yongzhou Chrysanthemum Stone Museum. The exhibition displayed more than 100 fine chrysanthemum stone carvings and was widely praised by the public.

• 2025: Participated in the Changsha "5·18 International Museum Day" themed exhibition, focusing on displaying the museum's collection of porcelain sculptures from the Republic of China. The exhibition was held in the main hall of the Changsha Museum and received a large number of visitors.

• 2026 (Upcoming): The "Black Shipyard Collection Exhibition" and the "Chinese Ancient Architecture Living Art Exhibition" are scheduled to be unveiled in the third quarter. The former will display nearly 100 pieces of Changsha Kiln cultural relics from the Black Shipyard, while the latter will present the restoration process of ancient architecture components in an immersive manner.

六、 Cultural Characteristics & Cultural Services

The museum adheres to the development concept of "integration of cultural relics, gardens, and architecture". Relying on its unique resources of ancient architecture and folk art collections, it actively carries out public cultural services, builds diversified cultural education and exchange platforms, and lives up to its multiple identities as a research base, an international cultural exchange base, and a social science popularization base.

Cultural Relics Protection and Inheritance

The museum's greatest feature is "using ancient architecture to display ancient folk art". The museum itself is a large-scale cultural relic: the core three ancient Huizhou-style folk residences, the Dongshan Temple Opera Stage, and the Dongshan Temple Guandi Temple were all relocated from other places and restored using traditional crafts. These ancient buildings have a history of hundreds of years and are perfectly integrated with the Jiangnan-style garden landscape. This organic combination of "ancient architecture as the exhibition space and ancient folk art as the exhibits" achieves the innovative protection and inheritance of cultural relics. In terms of collection protection, the museum has a professional cultural relics protection team, which regularly carries out professional maintenance such as dust removal, insect prevention, and mildew prevention on the collection. The constant temperature and humidity cultural relics warehouse built in 2023 provides a more suitable storage environment for the collection.

Research and Education

Relying on its unique resources, the museum has developed a series of research courses covering ancient architecture appreciation, folk art experiences, and red culture learning, such as "Tongguan Ceramic Rubbing Making", "Huizhou Ancient Architecture Scaled Model Building", and "Red Education - Visiting the Former Site of the Tongguan Ceramic Workers' Branch". These courses have been selected into the catalog of research courses for primary and secondary school students in Changsha and even the entire Hunan Province. The museum has supporting facilities such as a professional manual classroom and an outdoor sketching area. It can receive 500 people for research and study tours and 100 people for academic discussions every day. Up to now, it has established long-term cooperative relations with more than 20 primary and secondary schools and 10 colleges and universities in the province. Every year, it receives tens of thousands of students for research practice and provides more than 100 internship positions for students of related majors in colleges and universities.

Cultural Exchange

The museum is an important window for external cultural exchanges. On the one hand, it carries out in-depth cooperation with professional institutions such as the Hunan Provincial Museum, the Changsha Museum, and the Hunan Provincial Tea Culture Research Association in various forms, including joint exhibitions, academic seminars, and course development. Since 2021, it has jointly held more than 20 thematic exhibitions with public museums. On the other hand, it also undertakes the function of international cultural exchange. As of the first half of 2026, it has received delegations from dozens of countries and regions, including the United States, Germany, France, Japan, and South Korea, as well as many foreign art groups. It has promoted the overseas spread of traditional Chinese folk art and ancient architecture culture through thematic exhibitions and cultural exchange activities. In addition, the museum also actively participates in the construction of the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Regional Museum Alliance, sharing exhibition resources and experience with member museums.

Public Cultural Activities

The museum regularly holds diverse public cultural activities throughout the year to meet the cultural needs of different groups of people. For example, during traditional festivals such as the Lantern Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival, it will hold themed activities such as "Hanfu Wear + Lantern Riddles Guessing" and "Traditional Poetry Reciting", which are very popular among citizens and tourists. On important dates such as the "International Museum Day" and "China's Cultural and Natural Heritage Day", it will carry out public welfare lectures on cultural relics appreciation and observation activities of ancient architecture restoration. In addition, the museum also provides a platform for intangible cultural heritage inheritors to hold dynamic display activities such as the production of Tongguan ceramics and the carving of Chrysanthemum stones for a long time. Citizens and tourists can not only appreciate the charm of intangible cultural heritage up close but also experience the production process themselves.

Supporting Facilities

The museum has complete supporting facilities to meet the needs of different visitors. There are public rest areas, cultural and creative sales areas, and specialty restaurants in the exhibition area, providing visitors with various services such as catering, shopping, and leisure. The "Mengdiequan" specialty B&B area renovated from ancient buildings has 6 independent courtyards. Visitors can choose to stay in the ancient-style B&B according to their preferences, realizing an immersive experience of "living in ancient architecture and appreciating ancient art". The entire museum area is equipped with barrier-free facilities such as accessible ramps and elevators, which are convenient for elderly visitors and visitors with mobility impairments.

七、 Development Vision

The museum's long-term development vision is to become a first-class non-state-owned museum in China, a "check-in point" for the study of ancient architecture and folk art, and an important cultural business card for the city of Changsha.

• Functional Vision: To achieve the organic unity of the three major functions of "cultural relics protection, research and education, and cultural exchange". Relying on the existing ancient architecture and collection resources, it will deeply explore the historical and artistic connotations of Hunan's local folk art, such as Tongguan ceramics, Taoyuan woodcarving, and Xiang embroidery. It will continue to develop high-quality research courses and exhibition projects, enrich the forms of cultural display and communication, and achieve the innovative protection and inheritance of excellent traditional culture.

• Construction Vision: The 3-acre expansion project in the later stage will be completed and open to the public in 2026. The expansion project includes the newly built "Xufan Cheng Memorial Hall", the "Black Shipyard Ceramic Art Exhibition Hall", and a new academic exchange center. After the expansion, the museum's total area will reach more than 13 acres, and the scale of the exhibition halls and the number of collections will be further expanded. The museum will also improve the supporting facilities for the research projects, further enriching the research experience projects related to ancient architecture and folk art.

• Operation Vision: It will adhere to the sustainable development path of "focusing on public cultural services and considering both social and economic benefits". It will continue to launch high-quality joint exhibitions and public welfare activities, enrich the online visiting experience, and develop cultural and creative products with Changsha's local characteristics. It will continue to deepen the integration with the tourism industry and work with public museums, cultural institutions, and tourism enterprises to create a new model of cultural tourism integration. Through these efforts, it will further enhance the museum's influence in the industry and among the public.

八、 Historical Review

From the start of the project's construction in 2013 to the completion of the first phase of the project and its opening to the public in 2018, and then to its official registration as a museum in 2021, the Changsha Shaxi Guo'an Art Museum has gone through a arduous but brilliant development process. From a private collection to a public cultural service venue, it has now become an important cultural landmark in Changsha and even the entire Hunan Province.

Looking back on the development process of the past 10 years, the museum has always adhered to the development concept of "protecting ancient architecture, inheriting folk art, and spreading culture". It has achieved a leap-forward development from a private collection to a formal museum, constantly improving its exhibition and cultural service functions. Its unique characteristics of "using ancient architecture to display ancient folk art" and "integrating collection, exhibition, research, and education" have been widely recognized by the industry and the public.

In the future, the museum will continue to focus on the protection of cultural relics and the inheritance of folk art, making positive contributions to the prosperity and development of the cause of cultural heritage protection and public cultural services.
